The short answer
hipages publishes a national hourly guide of $50–$100. Airtasker publishes a Sydney task-total guide of $240–$320. They describe different measures and are kept separate below. GST is not stated; your job needs its own written quote.
Two ways a handyman job can be priced
An hourly figure describes labour time. A task total describes a completed job with a particular scope. Comparing them directly can hide the number of items, materials and minimum charges. Use the guides to ask better questions, rather than multiplying a task price by hours.
National hourly and call-out guides
| Job or charge | Published guide | Publisher & scope |
|---|---|---|
| Handyman hourly rate | $50–$100 / hour | hipagesNational guide; GST not stated |
| Call-out fee | $50–$150 | hipagesNational guide; initial time inclusion varies; GST not stated |
AUD guide figures, checked 2 October 2026. Published by third parties, not our rates or a Bankstown average. GST, materials and platform-fee inclusions are not standardised. Ask for an itemised written quote for your job.
The hipages hourly and call-out figures are national guides, updated 24 July 2026. They are not our rates or a Bankstown price survey.

Airtasker’s guide was updated 17 June 2026. Its city table describes typical total costs per job from its data, while the separate task categories describe the job involved. The Sydney row is broader than Bankstown and does not establish a local fixed price.
What changes your written quote?
Count the items and describe the condition. Adjusting two sound cupboard hinges differs from finding compatible replacements for damaged fittings. Assembly complexity, the wall type for a shelf, paint preparation and access all change the work involved.
Ask for a quote showing labour, supplied materials, any call-out charge, finishing, disposal and GST separately. If a return visit is needed for drying or a missing part, the scope should say so. A low hourly number alone cannot tell you the total price.
How to describe your job
Name each task and room, the number of items, rough dimensions and who supplies the parts. Keep product instructions and photos ready. Mention stairs, parking, restricted windows and permission for a rented home or apartment.
A combined request gives a clearer picture of the work. It does not promise a discount or make specialist tasks suitable for a handyman. The whole job is assessed together, including its total value.
When the job needs another trade
Electrical wiring, plumbing, draining, gas, air conditioning and refrigeration need the appropriate authorisation in NSW at any value. This site’s offer excludes those trades, structural changes, renovations and waterproofing. Use the NSW regulator’s rules for job scope rather than a national marketplace’s general licensing advice.
Our service covers minor, non-structural work. Residential building jobs are limited to $5,000 in total, including labour, materials and GST. Electrical, plumbing, gas and other specialist trades are outside this service. The limit applies to the whole job; work cannot be split into smaller invoices to avoid licensing. NSW licensing rules.
Choose the relevant service
For furniture, start with flat-pack assembly. For everyday hardware, see door and cupboard repairs. For walls, see minor plaster repairs. Each page explains what to have ready before the work is priced.
Questions about this guide
How much does a handyman charge per hour?
hipages’ main guide, updated 24 July 2026, publishes $50–$100 per hour nationally. GST is not stated. It is a benchmark, not this business’s rate or a Bankstown average.
How much does a handyman job cost in Sydney?
Airtasker’s guide, updated 17 June 2026, gives $240–$320 as a typical Sydney completed-task total. It is not an hourly rate; GST is not stated.
Is the call-out fee additional?
Ask the person quoting. hipages publishes $50–$150 as a national call-out guide and says initial work time is sometimes included. A quote should state the actual charge and what it covers.
Are materials and GST included?
The published rows do not standardise those inclusions. Ask for an itemised total showing labour, materials, fees and GST before agreeing to work.
Does a list of jobs cost less?
A combined list helps explain the scope and travel arrangements, but it does not establish a discount. The full job needs its own quote and must remain within the appropriate licensing scope.
Can a quote exceed $5,000?
This minor residential building offer is capped at $5,000 including labour, materials and GST per whole job. Work over that threshold requires appropriate licensing and is outside this service.
